Gay Historical Novels

1997

COWELL, Stephanie: The Players: a novel of the young Shakespeare **
A little heavy on the historical accuracy but still a great story of Shakespeare and the young earl of whom he wrote "...shall I compare thee to a summer's day?".

1999

PROULX, Annie: Close Range: Wyoming Stories ***
An anthology including 'Brokeback Mountain', which you may just have heard of.

1998

Elizabeth Knox: The Vintner's Luck *****
Magical realism at its best. France 1808, a wine maker enters into a strange relationship with an angel, with tragic consequences.

1993

IVERSEN, Cap: The Dakota Series #2: Silver Saddles ***
A nice addition to the series but, IMHO, losing some steam.

1992

IVERSEN, Cap: The Dakota Series #1: Arson! ****
A great m/m western series with all the classic elements and a sweet romance too.

1978

RENUALT, Mary: The Praise Singer unrated
review pending

1975

BURGESS, Anthony: Nothing Like the Sun unrated
Nothing Like the Sun is a magnificent, bawdy telling of Shakespeare's love life.

undated

Mel Keegan: White Rose of Night **
Crusades, Saxon knight and his squire. Sometimes sexy, but the story is only OK. More on the explicit side -- but with enough romance to qualify for a review.
